Our Contributors

Go Furness is a website which is bought to you by a team of contributors from a variety of disciplines. They all share a passion for encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit of Furness. Keep reading to find out a bit more about the faces behind the website.

Phil Powell

Phil worked for many years at the forefront of the New Media industry in London, before relocating back to Furness in 2006. He has worked for a variety of big-name clients including Audi, Levi’s, BBC and Sony. His work for U2 received a BAFTA nomination and scooped a prestigious Cannes Lions award.

Phil is a co-founder of We Make Media, an ambitious and innovative creative media agency based in Furness. We Make Media are responsible for the design, build and upkeep of the Go Furness website, and Phil is a regular contributor.

Emma Jones

Emma is Founder of the home business website Enterprise Nation and author of ‘Spare Room Start Up – how to start a business from home’

She has been working with Furness Enterprise on the Encouraging Entrepreneurship in Furness project for the past five years, helping to organise events, online activity and an annual enterprise publication.

Sally Broom

Sally Broom is a local entrepreneur who returned home to Ulverston after university to start her own travel website. 18 months on Sally is still working full time on developing Your Safe Planet which now sees almost 200,000 hits a month and international profile.

Sally also runs Furness Young Professionals, the network for young, driven individuals living in Furness wanting to make the most of living in the area.

John Barker

John has been with Furness Enterprise for nearly ten years, and his main focus in that time has been the development of enterprise across a wide range of project activities. Initially supported by the Heart of Barrow local partnership, the current work – Encouraging Entrepreneurship in Furness – is being funded under contract to West Lakes Renaissance.

Highlight of the project to date must be the award of north west winners in the ‘Enterprising Britain Competition 2008’, in which the judges were particularly impressed by our enterprising work with young people – including FYP, local schools and colleges, Universities – that has helped to show Furness as ‘a place to live and work’. This website – Go Furness – is specifically aiming to support this.
