Even more foundations in Art
Here’s a final selection of contributions for this week’s feature on the Foundation Art & Design course at Barrow Sixth Form College. Students who have recently completed the course share their experiences and plans for the future.

I loved the Art Foundation course and think it has been a brilliant year. The course is fun and teaches you a lot of different art techniques and styles. It has helped me build a strong portfolio of work, which got me a place at Bournemouth University. I’ve always had an interest in animation and computer graphics but during the course I have equally enjoyed the fine art and textiles work. This September I am going to Bournemouth University to study ‘Computer Visualisation and Animation’, so I can hopefully further my career into the digital filming industry.

The art foundation course at Barrow Sixth Form College was a really helpful experience and I recommend it to anyone. It helped me develop more skills and choose a career line that I had not considered. It also helped my confidence in using other materials and techniques that I would have never used e.g. Photoshop, Linoprinting and Collagraphs. My next destination is the Design course at Liverpool Hope University which will help me develop more skills that I can use in my future career as an artist. After Liverpool I hope to be enrolled in the forensic art course at Dundee University or become a practitioner, with training on the design course.

I am glad that I chose to do the Art Foundation course, it was an enjoyable experience. One of my favourite parts of the course was completing a workshop by local artist Martin Copley making a raku fired head and figurine which was a process I hadn’t tried before. I am looking forward to studying at Blackpool and the Fylde College in September.

I have really enjoyed doing the art foundation at barrow 6ht form this year and would recommend it to any one wanting to go on to a degree level in the art world. On the course we have worked with artists such as Martin Copley and have visited many art galleries in Manchester and London. This year has really allowed me to experiment with different mediums and help me decide which art path I want to go down. I have decided to take a gap year, working in Africa, Durban, working with children doing art and sports, traveling and gaining work experience before going on to university to hopefully study illustration.

I feel like I have gained a great deal from completing the foundation course at Barrow Sixth Form. Firstly beginning the course I gradually found myself being more and more distanced from a computer screen and experimenting with other more traditional methods which all work well even within my chosen discipline graphic design. Through doing the course I have broadened my knowledge and experience using different techniques and methods and as a result I have found my work to be more diverse and interesting. More importantly than anything I don’t think I could have asked for a better group of people to be working with and now I have a bunch of new friends I wouldn’t have had if I had decided not to go on this course!
Check out more work from the students in our photo gallery – and don’t forget to check out the rest of the articles we’ve been publishing this week.
