Free Digital Art Workshops

Signal Films is giving you a chance to get up to date with current digital media technologies & digital art
in MARCH 2010.

SIGNAL FILMS are pleased to be playing host to visiting digital artist Emma Tolmie who will be leading a series of free digital art workshops in Barrow-in-Furness throughout March for people wanting to explore and try new skills in digital technologies.

People aged 16yrs+, of all skills and experiences, are welcome to come along to try out hands on taster sessions in using digital media, photography, the web and film creatively. Participants then have the option to go on to work in small groups with Emma to develop further digital art skills, from getting images and work online using flickr, youtube and vimeo to creating video artworks and web based artwork – an excellent opportunity to get up to date with current digital media technologies and digital art. Emma will also be available for one-to-one advice sessions for people wanting advice starting out in digital art and media or for artists wanting to improve their practice.

An Edinburgh-based artist, Emma was awarded the Alt-w Award 2009 for her project Imagine 3D and mixes low-tech gadgetry and high-tech imagery to explore digital culture to enrich film, develop interactive sculptures and convert screen-saver landscapes into computer game animations.  You can see more of her work on www.emmatolmie.co.uk.

Participant’s finished pieces will be exhibited locally and online later this year. Art work from our last digital art workshops in December 2009 are due to be exhibited at Artgene, opening to the public on 6th March during Signal Films’ Film Insiders Talent Festival. Local artists who took part will be on-hand to display and discuss their range of artwork displayed through projections, installations and screenings.

Stephen Fallows (Barrow) took part in the November workshops and found it a great opportunity to work with a professional artist and ’explore new possibilities and learn new ways of working with art.’

Similarly, Ellie Chaney (Ulverston) said: ‘I really benefited from being in such a relaxed environment and being encouraged to experiment…’. Since the course Ellie has secured a residency at Lanternhouse International developing her artwork.

Other feedback from participants included ’it made me look art in a less traditional way,’ and ‘a great opportunity to use ‘hands on’ professional equipment and be challenged to think in a new direction.’

This project has been run by Signal Films (www.signalfilms.co.uk) a digital film and media company in Barrow-in-Furness as part of their “Digital ReGeneration” scheme, which has an emphasis on using digital technologies creatively. Funded by the Arts Council, Barrow Borough Council, Barrow Regeneration and Northern Rock.

These opportunities are free and travel costs can be covered for people outside of Barrow. Participants can take part in one or all of the opportunities by registering with Signal Films – for more information they should contact Signal Films on: signalfilms.co.uk or 01229 839983

Deadline for registration is FRIDAY 26TH FEBRUARY 2010
