News. What's going on in Furness
A good news story
Simone Commandeur is a student at Lancaster University. She joined the ‘On the Bus to Barrow’ visit on 25th April and was very pleased she did. That day she met David Clark from Centrica in an encounter that has led to her securing valuable work experience. Both David and Simone give their take on this good news story.
In David’s words:
“Simone approached us directly at the Furness Enterprise event at Abbey House in Barrow. She was looking for some form of work experience in the summer and was particularly interested in our business.
We recognised her potential for a summer work placement as her academic knowledge and obvious interest and enthusiasm for her subject appealed to us and there was an opportunity.
We invited her to meet with us and this lead to her summer placement. However that has developed further. Simone has no lectures on a Friday and she is now working part time (Friday) of each week for the rest of the academic year supporting our Field Operations Environmental Advisor, contributing to our business performance and gaining good experience.
Thanks to Furness Enterprise for this helpful introduction!”
In Simone’s words:
“During the ‘On the bus to Barrow’ trip I met David Clarke from Centrica. Through David and his colleague I was given the chance to meet with their Environmental Advisor, and was offered a summer placement. I found the placement to be a great experience as I gained first hand knowledge that you simply can’t get from a degree. At the end of the placement I was offered a part time position whist I complete my degree. I have worked at Centrica for five months now, 7 weeks of which were full-time in the summer.
The ‘On the bus to Barrow’ day provides us with a unique chance to network with a large number of companies. I feel that with enough initiative and interest it can be a careers day that’s as successful for somebody else as it has been for me.”
