Magpie

Here’s an excellent local success story: a college student who exhibited at the Art Foundation – Lucy Sanderson – has also started her own business: Magpie.

Magpie creates ‘one off’ pieces of jewellery and accessories, Each piece is handcrafted and individually designed, using the finest vintage products sourced from all around the UK, creating unique pieces especially for you. At Magpie we pay exceptional attention to detail, to ensure the very highest standard.

Magpie uses buttons, bottle tops, ribbons, gems, broken bits of jewellery and beads to embellish each piece to make them as individual as you are! We couldn’t reproduce the same piece twice even if we wanted to, which makes each quirk on our bags, badges and button earrings even more special. Magpie is ever evolving and growing; we’re making new products all the time, all updates of events and new products will be posted on the website.

Lucy explains how she got into business:

I studied French, Fine Art and English literature at Barrow sixth form, just completed Art foundation, in which my final major project specialized in jewellery and accessory design and production.

I created a brand name ‘Magpie’ and a website www.magpie-online.com where I could promote and sell my work. I wanted to do a project that could incorporate all the skills I had learnt over the past year, whilst trying new techniques. This project would have a sense of longevity, something I could carry on over the summer and when I get to University.

The exhibition & fashion show was a great end to a fantastic year, celebrating all our hard work and letting the public see the young, creative talent in the area.

I plan to go to Lancaster University in October to do Management, still not sure what I want to do in the future, but, I’ve always liked the idea of being my own boss, and running my own business.
