Sky's the limit
Another in our series of profiles of past students from Barrow 6th Form – and the career adventures they’ve had after starting their journey in Furness.
Erin Harrison describes how she’s progressed in a career in broadcasting:
After leaving Barrow Sixth Form College I went to Edinburgh University and gained a 1st Class BSc (Hons) in Geology. I then secured a job with BSkyB (Sky TV) to train as a management accountant and deferred my entry for 6 months to enable me to go travelling. When I returned from travelling I moved to London where I trained to be a management accountant with Sky. After 3 years I was promoted to Financial Analyst in their Third Party Channels department. I look after the finance side of all of the deals for the Third Party Channels on Sky (such as MTV, Discovery, FX and more recently ESPN) and the HD channels.
It’s very interesting but tough work negotiating with the channels to get the best deals and content for Sky but the perks of my job include the events I get to go to and the ‘celebrities’ I get to meet including Dick and Dom, Andi Peters and most recently, Tom Cruise.
In April 09 I was invited to help on a short term secondment at, ‘Premiere’ (now known as Sky Deutschland) in Germany and I’m going to be going out there in the near future to work for a longer period to help them get back on their feet and become as successful as BSkyB in the UK.
